Mount Pleasant Town Council moves to keep vape shops away from schools, churches and parks

The vape shop ordinance moved fast, with a second reading set for Dec. 7

  1. Oct. 28Town leaders delayed approving signage for the shop.
  2. Nov. 2Council voted unanimously to advance the ordinance at a special meeting.
  3. Dec. 7A second reading of the ordinance is scheduled.

If you've wondered about the vape shop planned for Coleman Boulevard, Town Council has acted. The nine-member council voted unanimously Monday to advance an ordinance barring smoke and vape shops from opening within 1,000 feet of a school, church or park. The planned 54 Smoke and Vape at 709 Coleman Blvd. sits slightly under 1,000 feet from .

South Carolina Public Radio says the ordinance also covers daycares, and existing shops would have five years to comply if it passes. WCIV reported the town called the special meeting after learning of the shop.

  • Spacing: no vape shop within 1,500 feet of another
  • Parent comments to the design board: more than 70
  • Signs: the design board denied the request for five LED signs

“This town needs to send a message that this is not what we want for our kids,” Councilman Jake Rambo said. If the rules pass, Mount Pleasant would join a growing number of South Carolina towns with them.

We always hear about the young people who misbehave but there are really sweet kids out there.

“We had about twenty ring our doorbell on Halloween and these boys and girls were incredibly polite. Not only did they say hello or trick or treat but asked how many pieces of candy they should take. When we asked if they were having fun they said yes and then added, “How are you?” One girl stopped as she went back…”
