Mount Pleasant Town Council voted unanimously Monday to keep a vape shop from opening near Moultrie Middle School. The vote was first reading of an ordinance that would set a 1,000-foot buffer between vape shops and schools, churches, day cares, parks and other places kids gather. Measured from property lines, the planned store is too close to both the school and a church across the street.
Mayor Will Haynie said first-reading approval lets the town use a "pending ordinance doctrine," which can stop businesses from rushing in applications before the rules take effect. Councilman Daniel Brownstein said the second and final vote could add products the list missed, like kratom.
- Covered places: K-12 schools, day cares, youth centers, parks, churches
- Signage: the Design Review Board denied it last week
- Vote: unanimous
