Good morning, Mount Pleasant. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 2nd of December.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant’s Health, Recreation and Events Committee did not move forward with off-leash hours after many locals voiced their opposition — the plan to pilot off-leash hours at James B. Edwards Passive Park and Kearns Park Trail was stalled, so dog laws will remain unchanged. This decision comes after complaints about park waste and inaccessibility due to unchecked dog activity.  WCIV
  • Keira Myers earned the Eagle Scout rank on Nov. 22 by following in the footsteps of her four older brothers and completing a project that built furniture and gathered supplies for Neighborhood House. Councilmember Howard Chapman honored her with a key to the Town of Mount Pleasant.  Moultrie News
  • Today is Giving Tuesday and several local organizations in the Lowcountry are offering matching donations and special incentives to support animal shelters, disaster relief, community programs and museum events—campaigns that invite residents to give generously.  WCIV

CRIME NEWS

  • Coyote trapping season began Monday in South Carolina after Isle of Palms police reported a coyote snagged a family’s dog from a rental home's yard early in the morning—officials advise pet owners to leash their dogs and secure trash to reduce attractants.  WCIV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant Committees of Council met Monday to discuss the Asian Longhorned Beetle — a pest that came from Asia and now threatens local trees by laying eggs and tunneling inside them. The Beetle Eradication Program and USDA will work to control the infestation as the town is updated on new protocols.  WCIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority is asking for public input on transit improvements through a series of open houses, including today at Mt. Pleasant Municipal Court and sessions on Dec 3 at the Charleston County Public Library and Dec 4 at St. Matthew Baptist Church — with a virtual survey also available on Dec 9. Participants will share feedback on service reliability and future expansion to help guide changes over the next five to 20 years.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • First responders will bring holiday cheer to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital by lighting the building’s exterior with emergency lights and visiting with special guest Santa starting on December 4th. Hospital staff, first responders and Walmart volunteers will pack gift bags (including coloring books, crayons, and bath toys) for patients on December 9th, 16th and 23rd.  WCIV
