COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Credit One Stadium held the 2025 Palmetto Freedom Fest on Nov. 7 with over 400 guests, raising $1.1 million for the Folds of Honor Palmetto State Chapter. An anonymous donor + matched $250,000 to boost total support to over $2.6 million in four years.  Moultrie News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sewee Shell Ring in Francis Marion National Forest is a man-made structure built about 4,000 years ago by early indigenous people. A rebuilt footpath now leads visitors to the quiet site—one of about 50 similar rings along the South Carolina coast that offers clues about early Lowcountry life.  The Post and Courier

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in South Carolina rose 3.1 cents per gallon to about $2.71 on Monday—experts say prices will stay low for the holiday season—and refinery maintenance may improve supply.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Charleston County School of the Arts was named a Blue Ribbon School on November 17 at the Statehouse, where state education leaders recognized its strong academic and arts programs—making it the 14th school in the district to earn the honor.  Charleston County School District
  • On November 7, Whitesides Elementary held a Patio Popcorn Party to honor eight fourth and fifth graders who read at least five books as part of the Reading Passport Program—this program gives students stamps and prizes when they reach 5, 10, or all 20 books, with another party planned for February.  Charleston County School District
  • According to the 2025 South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Assessments, 65% of CCSD students in Grades 3-8 scored proficient or above in English Language Arts—a 31-point increase since 2019—and 54% scored proficient in math with an 11-point rise from pre-pandemic levels. Superintendent Anita Huggins credited the gains to intentional leadership, evidence-based teaching and targeted resource allocation.  Charleston County School District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The government shutdown ended with a new spending bill that passed a measure limiting hemp products to 0.4 mg THC per container. Local hemp farmers and retailers in Mount Pleasant may face tough changes as they adjust to the rule—most current products will no longer comply.  WCIV
  • TriCounty Link Transit is holding open houses to get rider feedback on a transit study that will improve services in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. The first session was on Nov. 17 at Johns Island Library, today's event is at the St. Stephen American Legion Hut in Berkeley County from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., and another session is scheduled for Nov. 19 at the Doty Park Depot in Summerville.  WCIV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Wando Marching Band finished 11th at the Bands of America Grand National Championship in Indianapolis over the weekend — an impressive result for 182 Charleston County students who advanced to the finals after a strong preliminary round. Superintendent Anita Huggins praised the mid-sized band for their passion and hard work.  WCIV
  • From Dec. 21 to Dec. 23, 10 young men from the Charleston area will run a relay from Furman University to Charleston Southern University to honor their late coach, mentor, and community leader Brian Johnson—who inspired local athletes and helped shape lives—and raise funds for charities he valued. The runners will cover more than 200 miles and support organizations such as the Mount Pleasant Track Club, Academic Magnet Boys’ Cross Country Team, and The Lonon Foundation.  Moultrie News
