COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant Towne Centre will host its annual Lights Up event on Nov 22, starting at 6 p.m. with live music from East Cooper Baptist Church Choir and local band 40 Years Too Late—guests will enjoy local food and festive activities before the 44-foot Christmas tree is lit with a laser show at 7:30 p.m.; the free event benefits Camp Rise Above and is co-hosted by Brian Cleary and local sponsors.  Moultrie News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Media outlets from across the Lowcountry gathered on November 7 for Co-op Media Day hosted by several electric cooperatives, which gave reporters an inside look at how these groups work and serve the community—demonstrating their role in powering two million residents. The event featured discussions, safety demonstrations, and a tour of an emergency operations center.  Moultrie News
  • Stoughton Trailers LLC has partnered with Northstar Trailer in Mount Pleasant to expand its dealer network into North and South Carolina. Northstar Trailer will offer a full line of transportation equipment including dry van, PureBlue refrigerated trailers, intermodal chassis and parts—using two drop yards for immediate customer availability.  Moultrie News

  • Dr. Random is a new podcast hosted by local Dr. Sarah Laverone who uses her background in law, art, and teaching to guide simple talks—she interviewed guests like Dr. Karin Louise, Kristina Shea, and realtor Bonnie Cooke in the first four episodes. The show will discuss dog behavior with expert Susan Merritt next—listeners can find all episodes on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.  Moultrie News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Trident Technical College is asking residents to donate food items at drop-off locations at all its campuses including the Mount Pleasant campus—donations like frozen turkeys, canned cranberries, and green beans will help students deal with food insecurity as the holiday season nears and SNAP benefits drop amid the government shutdown.  WCBD
  • The Charleston County School District Board of Trustees and Superintendent Anita Huggins honored dozens of principals for raising school achievement on the 2025 School Report Card. Leaders from neighborhood, partnership, and charter schools were recognized—each noted for their strong focus on student success.  Charleston County School District
  • Kate Atkins, a physical education teacher at Stiles Point Elementary, was chosen as one of eight educators statewide (selected through a rigorous process) to attend the Fall 2025 STAR seminar held on Seabrook Island from October 20 to 24. The week-long retreat featured book study sessions, a historic tour of Charleston, and an outdoor session (led by a Barrier Island Naturalist) to honor veteran teachers.  Charleston County School District
  • The Charleston County School District board voted 8-1 on November 10 to extend Superintendent Anita Huggins’ contract (from June 30, 2027, to June 30, 2031) after an excellent evaluation that noted gains in student achievement, money management, and community trust. Board Chair Pam McKinney said the decision shows the board’s strong confidence in her leadership as the district continues to improve.  Charleston County School District

SPORTS NEWS

  • Two local figure skaters, Twyla Tanner and Shandi Rauchut, have qualified to compete in the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Eastern Sectional Singles Final at Carolina Ice Palace (tickets are available November 11 through 15). They will use the competition as a step toward a national stage.  WCBD
