COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Zach Moffatt of Boy Scouts of America's Coastal Carolina Council recognized the Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant on Oct. 22 for donating $1,000 to local troops and presented Rotary President Ken Tallmadge with a Patron Member plaque (Moffatt is the district executive for the Black River and Etiwan districts).  Moultrie News
  • Moncks Corner’s Berkeley Animal Center remains critically overcrowded and the Charleston Animal Society is hosting a week-long free adoption event to ease capacity issues at both campuses. Nearly 50 dogs were adopted over the weekend, and staff have added extra workers while planning a new adoption center— which will include a separate entrance— to shorten wait times.  WCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Oct. 10, the Alhambra Garden Club donated $700 to the CAS horticulture program to help fund seeds and tools for the classes. Teacher Paul Millar and the students received the check during a half-day event, marking the second year of support.  Moultrie News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources announced new rules at Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary that ban metal detectors, digging, and excavation to protect coastal bird nesting grounds effective immediately — enforcement on fossil collection will begin January 1.  WCIV
  • Clemson Extension’s Jacob Beach told the Mount Pleasant GREEN Commission that his team found the invasive Asian long-horned beetle on a maple tree at the Towne Centre shopping complex on Oct. 21; his crew surveyed 1,100 trees as part of a five-year plan to remove infested trees and notify 476 local tree-cutting businesses—residents will soon be asked to help report small exit holes to stop the bug from spreading further.  Moultrie News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Robin Hudson from Tidelands Health advised parents to use flashlights and reflective tape on costumes this Halloween to help children be seen in the dark—she also urged drivers to be careful at sunset and reminded families to check candy before eating it. The pediatrician stressed the need for a safety plan before trick-or-treating to ensure a safe evening for everyone.  WCBD
  • Starting next month, families enrolled in the Affordable Care Act may see their monthly premiums double, with a family of four potentially paying over $560 instead of $260. Rising costs from funding issues and higher prices for medicines and supplies may hit low-income, rural residents and retirees the hardest—consumers are urged to begin exploring alternative options.  WCIV
  • The South Carolina Department of Public Health will promote bat awareness during International Bat Week (starting Oct. 24) by urging residents to learn how bats reduce mosquitoes and to be alert for rabies risks. Officials advise that if bats are found indoors, a wildlife control operator should be called for safe removal (to prevent exposure).  WCIV
