COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ High school students from the Lighthouse Keepers program joined the Rotary Club at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on Oct. 15 to earn volunteer credits through Charleston County School District's CAS courses. The group, which includes participants from nine schools (engineering, biomedical science, entrepreneurship), met to support the charity organization's mission. Moultrie News
- ➤ T.D. McMurry will donate 15 percent of proceeds on Nov. 10 and Nov. 11 to the Warrior Surf Foundation+ a local nonprofit that offers surf therapy, yoga and community support for veterans. Melvin’s BBQ will offer a free Little Joe Sandwich on Veterans Day for veterans and active-duty military with valid ID+ available at its Mount Pleasant and James Island locations. Moultrie News
- ➤ Charleston Animal Society’s North Charleston and Berkeley shelters are caring for more than 1,300 animals – more than their capacity – and they are urgently asking for fosters or adoptions. Jeff Cook Real Estate is sponsoring all adoptions as local businesses offer temporary fosters to reduce the load on the overwhelmed shelters. WCBD
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A survey by the Joseph P. Riley Center for Livable Communities found that 46% of 561 tri-county respondents experienced domestic violence—examples include controlling actions, stalking, and physical abuse—and My Sister’s House said the findings show many in the community face abuse. The Post and Courier
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sgt. Jermaine Gilliard was honored at a Mount Pleasant town council meeting on October 14 for his 25 years of dedicated law enforcement service—his career has spanned roles from police officer to senior officer and now sergeant overseeing school resource officers. Police Chief Mark Arnold praised his steady leadership and genuine community connection during the ceremony. Moultrie News
- ➤ South Carolina emergency officials and teams conducted the Great Southeast ShakeOut drill on Oct. 16 at 10:16 a.m. More than 1.8 million people from eight states and Washington, D.C. took part in the exercise to be ready if a strong earthquake hit. WCBD
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Alex Hamberis from Greenville has joined Charleston ENT and Allergy – South Carolina’s largest practice for ear, nose, throat and allergy care – where she will provide compassionate treatment for patients of all ages. She earned her degree from UNC Chapel Hill, completed her training at MUSC and Mount Sinai, and is set to support holistic patient care in the region. Moultrie News
