COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rotary Club members Ed Wyatt and Billy Simmons have logged a combined 84 years of perfect attendance—Wyatt with 45 years and Simmons with 39 years—demonstrating long-standing civic commitment. The club now values active involvement in service projects over strict attendance requirements.  Moultrie News
  • On Oct. 13, 250 REV Federal Credit Union employees volunteered for local charities by packing essential items for more than 25 nonprofits—helping them reach a milestone of 10,000 volunteer hours and marking the fifth year of their Day of Good project.  WCIV
  • The Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant is raising funds to buy a Toyota Hilux that will be turned into an ambulance for mothers and children in Malawi. The $48,000 project relies on local and international money—with funds already raised—that will help people reach a far hospital on rough roads.  Moultrie News
  • The annual Arnold Collins Legacy Classic Golf Tournament returns tomorrow at Wescott Plantation Golf Club in Charleston to raise funds for new affordable housing and youth programs in the community. Registration is $150 per golfer and $600 per team while options to donate are still available — all aimed at helping meet rising housing needs.  WCIV

  • Rich Ruben has retraced his father Manny's path as a Jewish POW in Nazi Germany after a German documentary maker invited him to uncover the story behind his plane exploding and his forced march through brutal winter conditions—he documented these efforts by founding the Kriegie Foundation to honor World War II airmen.  The Post and Courier

  • CCSD celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring former Hispanic students who are now working as educators, interpreters, and parent advocates. The women use their own learning journeys to help Hispanic families adjust and feel supported—bridging language gaps and building trust.  Charleston County School District

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Some Lowcountry beaches suffered erosion after high tides reached the shore over the weekend on Sullivan’s and Isle of Palms—homes near Breach Inlet and Wild Dunes saw sand loss and damage, prompting urgent concerns over rising coastal development. Officials will meet today at 5 p.m. to discuss emergency beach measures for affected areas.  WCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charleston Animal Society will end its contract with Charleston County for the TNR program on October 25—after a funding dispute over feral cat services—and Pet Helpers on James Island will soon be the county’s only designated shelter.  WCIV
  • Crews will close a section of Coleman Boulevard between Bayview Drive and Houston Northcutt in Mount Pleasant for asphalt milling and paving starting at 7 p.m. on Oct. 16 and Oct. 19 — work will wrap up by 6 a.m. the next day — and drivers are advised to slow down.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • On November 1, cyclists will ride in the 7th Annual LOWVELO event across Mount Pleasant, Charleston, Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms to raise funds for lifesaving cancer research at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center — the only National Cancer Institute-designated center in South Carolina. Organizers invite everyone to choose a route from 7 to 80 miles, volunteer, or ride virtually as the event works to support innovative research.  Moultrie News
  • On the latest episode of Talk 2 The Doc, Dr. Susan Johnson — founder of Nature at Work — explained how spending time outdoors can boost health and clear the mind. New episodes air on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on WCBD’s streaming app.  WCBD
