COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Law enforcement agencies from across the Lowcountry will host National Night Out events Tuesday with the Mount Pleasant Police Department holding its event at the Farmers Market from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.—residents can interact with officers and watch live demonstrations.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Charleston School of Law announced a new partnership with Genie AI — a leader in legal technology — to add advanced AI tools to its transactional law team program, giving students practical skills for future legal work.  Moultrie News
  • On October 1, the board of trustees voted to adopt bylaws that establish the new CCSD Education Foundation — an independent initiative that will strengthen public education with community partnerships and private support. The Foundation will improve classroom instruction, recognize outstanding educators, and boost family engagement in line with district priorities.  Charleston County School District
  • On October 2, nearly 115 golfers played in the Mark Cobb Memorial/Ron McWhirt Scholarship Golf Tournament at Charleston Municipal Golf Course—raising $38,000 in funds for CCSD Class of 2026 students from local donors.  Charleston County School District
  • Berkeley County School District began new quarterly District Formative Assessments for students in grades 3 to 8 that now count on report cards; many parents are confused because they feel the tests do not match what is taught in class. One parent started a petition to remove the scores while the district said tests will appear only on fourth quarter report cards — prompting concerns about students' self-esteem.  WCIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charleston County is moving forward with its Highway 41 Corridor Improvement Project—despite opposition from Mount Pleasant leaders who passed a resolution in July—after a written update was provided at the town’s Transportation Committee meeting. The project will widen Highway 41, narrow lanes in the Phillips Community and add a road near Laurel Hill County Park, with final plan submission set for January and construction scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.  WCIV
  • Incumbent Mayor Will Haynie is running for a third term in November against newcomer Curt Thomas as he builds on his local record of public safety, quality of life, and conservation—key priorities for Mount Pleasant residents. He stresses his deep community ties and plans to support attainable housing while preserving green space for the town's future.  Moultrie News
  • Today, the Mount Pleasant Bids and Purchases Committee approved new sidewalks at Brickyard Plantation to help students from Laing Middle School and Jennie Moore Elementary safely cross U.S. Highway 17. The committee also backed a replacement pump at James B. Edwards Park and recommended stormwater pipe repair in East Wando—actions that address safety and drainage concerns.  Moultrie News
  • On Monday, the South Carolina State Ports Authority named Micah Mallace as its new president and CEO—he took over after Barbara Melvin resigned in August. Mallace, who served as the agency's chief commercial officer and later as president of Harbor Logistics, will lead the port team as it prepares to boost trade.  WCBD
