COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army opened registration this week for its Angel Tree Program at the West Ashley Corps at 2135 Ashley River Road—local families can sign up to help provide Christmas gifts to children in need while similar events are planned in other Lowcountry counties later in October.  WCIV
  • At the Sept. 23 City Council meeting, Isle of Palms Mayor Phillip Pounds honored Robert Heaton and Thomas 'Brandon' Blackwell with the Signal 30 Award for rescuing a rideshare driver from a sinking vehicle on Aug. 23 during record-breaking storms — they helped the driver to safety.  Moultrie News
  • Boone Hall will open its annual corn maze and pumpkin patch tomorrow — the eight-acre maze, a long-time fall favorite, is one of the largest in the Southeast. Officials advise visitors to allow about an hour to explore the maze as the event runs Fridays to Sundays until October 26.  WCBD

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Charleston’s The Pass announced plans to open a second location in Mount Pleasant later this fall. The deli will serve Italian sandwiches at a shop at Northcutt Plaza off Houston Northcutt Boulevard — building on the success of its original downtown site.  WCBD

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant business owner T.D. McMurry—who launched a free quarterly concert series blending fashion and music—will host a concert on Oct. 22 when Hotel Hugo performs, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and music starting at 7 p.m.  Moultrie News
  • Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum will mark the US Navy's 250th anniversary on Oct. 11 aboard the USS Yorktown — an event that runs from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and includes a Meet & Greet with Yorktown veterans and a cake cutting at 12:00 p.m. Following the ceremony — Charleston native Mark C. Fava will sign his book at the Smokey Stover Theater and in-person tickets will get a $3 discount.  Moultrie News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local officials in Charleston are watching tropical waves and have plans to lower lake levels & clear drains to cut flooding in low-lying areas. Charleston County Emergency Management is keeping teams on standby and has coordinated with the American Red Cross to prepare shelters if heavy rains hit.  WCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Multiple Charleston County law enforcement agencies and organizations are handing out free overdose prevention kits today — offering naloxone and prevention tips at several locations. The effort aims to reduce overdose deaths and support those affected by opioid addiction.  WCIV
