COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thirty-six years ago, Hurricane Hugo struck Sullivan’s Island as a Category 4 storm that brought strong winds, a record storm surge and caused weeks-long power outages—its $7 billion damage and loss of 49 lives leave lasting memories in the region. Meteorologists now say advances in radar, models and satellite technology have improved storm tracking and helped keep residents safer.  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today marks the start of fall as the Lowcountry gears up with many events such as pumpkin patches, hayrides, farm festivals, and historical tours that will run from late September through November — local venues will host activities ranging from costume parades to art auctions for all ages.  WCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Carolina public schools will soon have high-tech digital maps from Critical Response Group to help first responders reach emergencies faster — the state has allocated nearly $5 million with maps available to law enforcement beginning in 2026.  WCBD

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in the Midlands report multiple alligator sightings over the past week, with baby alligators seen at Edisto Garden Pond in Orangeburg and a 7- to 8-foot alligator observed at Columbia's Riverfront Park. Herpetologist Connor Amick from Riverbanks Zoo and Garden warned residents to give the reptiles plenty of space—regardless of their size—as they warm up during early morning and dusk.  WCIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senators Tim Scott and Sheldon Whitehouse introduced a bipartisan bill Friday to study the decline in native shellfish along the East Coast—focusing on clams, oysters and scallops. The bill will form a task force with experts and industry reps to study the issue and suggest ways to help South Carolina’s coastal economy.  WCIV
  • Mount Pleasant Town Council voted to increase the property tax millage rate by 3.7 to boost wages for first responders and said the change will add about $100 to a $700k home's tax bill and take effect in January 2026—officials said the decision was needed to keep good workers.  WCBD
  • Charleston County has narrowed 150 submissions to twelve final I Voted sticker designs featuring Lowcountry symbols such as Palmetto trees and the Ravenel Bridge. Residents can vote by reacting on the Elections Facebook page until noon on September 26—winning designs will be printed for early voting—while top artists earn museum memberships.  WCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA recalled over 85,000 bags of Kroger shrimp for potential cesium-137 contamination — the products were sold from June 12 to Sept. 17 and customers are advised to return or dispose of any affected items for a full refund.  WCBD
  • Empowering Youth SC and the Town of Mount Pleasant will host a community forum on suicide awareness and support on Sept. 30 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Municipal Complex Council Chambers (100 Ann Edwards Lane) where parents, caregivers, educators and teens can learn to spot warning signs and get help.  Moultrie News

  • David Manger from Roots and Shoots advised gardeners to remove weeds—using mulch and leaves for compost—to boost soil nutrients before the fall season. He explained that native plants like goldenrods and hibiscus support insects by providing needed nectar and habitat.  WCBD
  • Menchie Foster—full-time bank rep and avid gardener—decorates her Rifle Range Road home for all holidays with creative displays for Christmas, Halloween, and more.
