  • Tracey Booth Owens has published a new book that honors her father, the noted Lowcountry artist Jim Booth—Beacon of the Lowcountry: The Life, Art, and Legacy of Jim Booth. The richly illustrated coffee table book will be available Oct. 3 after presales began Sept. 19.  Moultrie News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Charleston County School District launched a new tutoring program that gives students extra help in core subjects in small groups. The district is partnering with vetted providers who will be paid based on improved student scores—ensuring that every dollar helps boost achievement.  WCBD

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In the Lowcountry creeks and marshes, dolphins perform rare strand feeding—beaching to snatch fish from muddy banks—while experts advise onlookers to maintain a 150-foot distance to avoid disturbing this natural behavior. Officials stress that giving the dolphins space helps them safely hunt and teach their young.  WCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace will speak at the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s National Golf Series on Sept. 22 at Dunes West Golf + River Club in Mount Pleasant. The annual event, hosted by The Whispering Marsh Charity Foundation, will raise funds for mortgage-free homes for Gold Star families and smart home projects for injured veterans and first responders.  WCIV
  • Mount Pleasant Town Council will consider raising salaries for first responders after a wage study found that firefighters are underpaid by 8 to 10 percent—officials say the move will help retain skilled staff. The council will discuss the proposal on Monday—aiming to address rising living costs and longer work hours.  WCBD

  • Mount Pleasant realtor Cheryll Woods-Flowers explains that property taxes are based on a home’s assessed value and local tax rates and notes that changes like home improvements or market shifts can raise the bill. SPORTS NEWS

  • Charleston County Parks is hosting the Chili Trail Run at Laurel Hill County Park in Mount Pleasant on Nov. 1, offering a 5K run or walk, a 10K run, and a Kids Dash for ages 3 to 7. Registration is open until Oct. 29 and packet pickup is from 8 to 8:45 a.m. — runners will start the 5K and 10K at 9 a.m. and enjoy hot chili and an awards ceremony at the finish.  Moultrie News
  • Georgetown County native Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won both the 100- and 200-meter races at the world championships in Tokyo on Sept. 19 and will return next month to Myrtle Beach to head a youth track clinic at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium—her fourth appearance at the event.  The Post and Courier
