- ➤ Hibben Warming Shelter will hold a volunteer informational session on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the church gym at 690 Coleman Blvd., Mount Pleasant—organizers say about 70 volunteers are needed each night to run the shelter. Moultrie News
- ➤ Federal budget cuts are set to end SNAP—Ed funding for Lowcountry Foodbank's nutrition classes, which may disrupt benefits for thousands by the end of September. The foodbank will hold its 5th Annual Walk to Fight Hunger on September 20th to raise funds and awareness about food insecurity. WCBD
- ➤ Four Charleston Harbor Branch Pilots received awards for rescuing a Canadian family from a sinking yacht after it struck the North Jetty in March. The pilots — including Jess Kunkel— acted quickly in dark, cold conditions and were honored at their dock on Wednesday. WCBD
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Ma’am Saab in Charleston now offers a lunch menu called Lunch Punch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, serving Pakistani dishes like butter chicken and kebabs from a walk-up window between Wentworth and Meeting Streets; local students can get a Paratha Wrap or Rice Bowl for $1 on September 19, with each dollar going directly to the Lowcountry Food Bank—supporting food equity in the region. - ➤ At the Sept. 16 meeting, GREEN Commission members discussed an Arbor Day cleanup at Pitt Street Bridge that will remove salt cedars and plant new, native species on Dec. 5—Town Planning will work with residents. Town Deputy Director Kevin Mitchell presented a wetlands ordinance draft for public feedback to set procedures for protecting local wetlands—officials want suggestions on technical language and input through social media. - ➤ SC Sea Grant has installed four low-cost water level sensors along the coast and inland areas that record data every five to six minutes during flooding events—emergency managers use this real-time information to decide on road closures and fishing advisories. This project, funded by SECOORA as part of the Southeast Water Level Network, aims to expand sensor coverage for better flood response. WCIV

- ➤ Perry Rourk, a lifelong Mount Pleasant resident who ran for council in 2023, is now one of nine candidates vying for four Town Council seats. He answered eight questions for the Moultrie News and said he will work to improve town services—like police, fire, and planning—and protect our community’s charm. Moultrie News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The FDA issued recalls for imported shrimp after it found the radioactive element Cesium-137 in products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, leading to the return of 18,000 bags sold between July 24 and Aug. 11 across 17 states including South Carolina. Local shrimpers said the incident shows the need to buy local—regulators report no illnesses and are working with distributors on additional safety measures. WCBD
