BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local restaurants are buying local seafood despite higher costs to support nearby shrimpers—Acme Lowcountry Kitchen on Isle of Palms paid $150,000 for 20,000 to 30,000 pounds of shrimp so they have it available all year. Some Mount Pleasant eateries also order shrimp regularly to feature it as a special menu item.  WCBD

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations will take place across the Lowcountry with community events including an environmental cleanup at Lake Moultrie on September 20th and a Tropical Fiesta in Mount Pleasant on September 28th—other activities will offer music, dance and educational programs to support local immigrant families.  WCBD
  • Mark Anders, a retiree in Ravenel, found hundreds of relics using his metal detector on the Poplar Grove land—items include a musket, buttons from Washington’s army, and more. He plans to donate the relics for display in Southeastern’s new office that will open by the end of the year—preserving the local history.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On September 16, Charleston County School District earned an AA+ credit rating from S&P Global Ratings & showed strong financial management with stable reserves and improved budgeting. Officials said the upgrade, which matches Greenville County School District’s rating, reflects a commitment to careful fiscal discipline and positions the district for a steady future.  Charleston County School District
  • This fall, students who finish Trident Technical College's 26-credit Aircraft Assembly Technology certificate will be eligible for Boeing Pre-Employment Training status for entry-level mechanic positions at Boeing South Carolina—this program lets them bypass the normal interview process and prepares them for job opportunities as Boeing expands its facilities to create over 500 new jobs. The certificate can be completed in two semesters and students may join in any semester subject to seat availability.  Moultrie News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • David Quick got approval from Mount Pleasant Waterworks in March to start a pollinator garden on an easement near Home Farm Road and Center Street; he planted over 30 native species and removed invasive ones to boost local wildlife—Guinn Wallover said the project inspires more community efforts to protect nature.  Moultrie News

  • Charleston County magistrate judge James B. Gosnell, Jr. was suspended from his duties after the state Supreme Court said credible information shows his service posed a threat to public safety and the justice system—details remain limited.  WCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Family Hospice Charleston opened its 10th site at 112 Rutledge Ave today to offer care that can last for months or years. The program helps patients get daily home visits and works with doctors to start care sooner — giving families more support at home.  Moultrie News
