- ➤ Hundreds of people gathered at the top of the Ravenel Bridge on Sunday evening to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk in a memorial vigil that included prayers, bagpipe music, and flower offerings—local organizers said additional gatherings are planned for the future. WCIV
- ➤ Jean’s Angels, a local non-profit, hosted a benefit dinner and auction Saturday at Trident Technical College that drew community leaders and residents to raise funds for a new warming center — the center in Berkeley County will open in winter to shelter those in need during extreme weather. North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess also declared September 13 as Jean’s Angels Day. WCBD

- ➤ Local restaurants are choosing 100% local shrimp despite higher prices so they can support local shrimpers. Acme Lowcountry Kitchen secured a year-round supply by writing a $150,000 check+ other restaurants also buy local shrimp regularly to keep money in our community. WCBD
- ➤ Lowcountry Local First announced the Localist Card program — a new tool for residents to support local businesses by gaining exclusive perks; cardholders can pre-purchase a $25 card that will work at over 35 establishments from November 1 to December 31. The physical card will be mailed in mid-October while a digital version is available for download, with plans to add more partners before the end of the year. Moultrie News

- ➤ On Sept. 12th, Oceanside Collegiate Academy named Kaitlyn Boerst as its scholar athlete for her strengths in academics, sports and community service. Ashley Ridge honored Blaine Wilson for his varsity football success and volunteer work at Joint Base Charleston — the program highlights local student achievements weekly. WCIV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the South Carolina Aquarium recorded 4 million pieces of litter in its Litter Journal—marking a nine-year citizen science project that has removed plastics from land and sea. The data is used in local city council meetings to support policies that reduce single-use plastics. WCBD
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At the Sept. 9 Town Council meeting, three local government employees were honored with Longevity Awards for their service to Mount Pleasant. Public Services Director Andy Weis commended Hillary Repik for 30 years of service—Police Chief Mark Arnold recognized Tamika Brown’s 25 years and Detective Daniel Neese’s 30 years in law enforcement. - ➤ Maria Jose Leiton, a Lowcountry woman who immigrated from Costa Rica with no criminal record, was detained during her return from vacation and held in multiple centers—from the Virgin Islands to Arizona—before being released in San Diego, far from home. She now awaits a hearing in a North Carolina courtroom next month and must check in with ICE via an app, fearing deportation may separate her from her 10-year-old son. WCBD
