COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Firefighters walked the Ravenel Bridge on Thursday to honor those killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks—carrying lanyards with photos of fallen colleagues. They vowed to keep the tribute alive as a lasting reminder of the sacrifices made that day.  WCIV
  • Citadel cadets honored the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks by climbing stairs and carrying extra weight—acts that symbolized the effort of first responders during the attacks. They wore white tags with names to remember those lost and participated in the Semper Fi Society's annual stair climb on campus.  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Parker Smith, EVP of McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation, and Lawton Roberts, CEO of Holy City Affairs Corporation, have partnered to offer celebrations of life that ease many burdens for grieving families—services include transportation, pet care, and more while still providing traditional funeral options. The new plan gives Lowcountry families, including those in Mount Pleasant, a way to plan memorable, stress-free memorial events.  Moultrie News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yiqing Ye, a 17-year-old senior at Academic Magnet High School in Mount Pleasant, was awarded the 2025 R.D. Bennett Community Service Scholarship on Sept. 11—this $5,000 prize came from The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina in recognition of his project that raised over $2,300 for Landmarks For Families. His project supported at-risk youth through shelter, education, and family reunification programs.  WCIV
  • Charleston County School District set a new record by naming 46 high school seniors as semifinalists for the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program, including 31 from Academic Magnet High School — the highest in the state and district, surpassing the 42 semifinalists in 2020 while these students will compete for nearly $26 million in scholarships this spring.  Charleston County School District

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Clemson University officials detected the invasive Asian longhorned beetle in Mount Pleasant at Sweetgrass Plaza and Seaside Farms subdivision, and they will quarantine the affected trees using identifiers (QR codes) to help contain its spread. Experts reported that the beetle weakens hardwood trees and advised residents to avoid moving tree debris to prevent further damage.  WCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During a Town Council special session on September 9, a formal complaint alleged that Tree Task Force member Deidre Kennedy verbally confronted a contractor on Cliffwood Drive—she reportedly told him he needed to be shot—prompting Councilmember Daniel Brownstein to call for her dismissal. Although Councilmember John Iacofano backed the motion, it was rejected 6—2 after Councilmember Laura Hyatt, Councilmember Mike Tinkey, and Mayor Will Haynie stressed that Kennedy was on her own property and exercising her free speech.  Moultrie News
  • Mount Pleasant Mayoral candidate Curt Thomas launched his campaign on Sept. 10 in the Cooper River Room, answering questions about his planned fight against two-term Mayor Will Haynie in November—he is a former Air Force member and State Trooper.  Moultrie News
  • At a Sept. 9 Town Council meeting, local government honored the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce with a Business Appreciation Week Proclamation for its continued service to local businesses and organizations.  Moultrie News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Stingrays player Mark Bavis, who played from 1994 to 1996 and later worked as an amateur scout for the Los Angeles Kings, died on United Airlines Flight 175 during the September 11 terror attacks and is remembered for helping the team win their first South Division title and having his number retired—honoring his lasting legacy with the club.  WCBD
