CULTURE NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant Towne Centre announced that its free outdoor concert series, Live Under The Oaks, will begin on Oct 2 at 6 p.m.—attendees should bring chairs or blankets to enjoy live music, a new food truck each week, and beer and wine from Burtons Grill & Bar as the fall season sets in. The series runs every Thursday in October.  Moultrie News
  • South Carolina native Dr. James Edwards has published a new book—To Invent Is Divine: Creativity and Ownership—which grew from a speech he gave in Dallas five years ago and spotlights faith and local innovation. He will sign copies at Towne Centre Barnes & Noble on Saturday Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Moultrie News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local shrimpers filed a lawsuit against restaurants that mislabel imported shrimp as local after a study found only four of 44 eateries served true wild-caught shrimp — the lawsuit amendment to recover lost profits and pending federal legislation aim to protect their livelihood.  WCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lisa McClary, the school nurse at Oakland Elementary, was named the second recipient of the 212°—The Extra Degree Award at a CCSD meeting on September 8. On August 19, she quickly used an EpiPen to treat a student who had a severe allergic reaction to ant bites on the playground.  Charleston County School District
  • Charleston County School Support started the school year with a strong focus on attendance by reaching out to families through door visits—calls and rides were provided to help students get to school. DoSS will continue its hands-on work throughout the year to keep every student in the classroom.  Charleston County School District

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials say that the Asian longhorned beetle was found in Mount Pleasant at a commercial shopping center—Clemson DPI and the USDA are checking the infestation and will soon announce a quarantine zone to protect local trees.  WCIV
