- ➤ East Cooper Meals on Wheels will celebrate its 40th anniversary on August 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall in Mount Pleasant as speakers including Mayor Will Haynie and original founder Cheryl Steadman honor volunteers and unveil a new name and logo that reflect the organization’s evolving mission. - ➤ Emily Cruse from Be A Mentor! shared her journey from teaching to school counseling at the Aug. 6 Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant meeting and explained her nonprofit's approach to building a village of support for young people. - ➤ Mount Pleasant firefighters responded to a house fire Tuesday morning on King Street (around 8:10 a.m.) when the fire started in the kitchen, and no injuries were reported. WCBD
- ➤ Mount Pleasant Fire and Rescue responded Monday morning to a house fire on King Street — the blaze began in the kitchen and no injuries were reported. WCIV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Wando High School Marching Band is getting ready to compete in the Bands of America Grand Nationals Competition after four years away. The 180-member band will spend over 200 hours practicing for the event scheduled for November 13—15 in Indianapolis. WCBD
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network will host its third annual Fins and Flippers Fall Fundraiser on Sept. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Bowen’s Island Dockhouse. The event will offer a Lowcountry boil, sweet treats, live music and raffle prizes to support marine mammal rescue and education efforts after the network responded to 37 strandings in 2025. - ➤ Town officials celebrated the renovation of the shrimp dock and processing facility on Shem Creek that began in 2019 when the town purchased the dilapidated property. The $3 million project includes a widened boardwalk and upgraded electrical systems—efforts that are expected to revive the local shrimping industry and support shrimpers in the community. WCBD
