COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Coakley Chapel in Hamlin Beach was saved from potential development — local preservationists and private donors purchased the historic building that has served as a community meeting spot since the early 1900s. The Lowcountry Land Trust will transfer the property soon for use as a public park with trails and a fishing pond, and local volunteers will help restore it in time for its 145th anniversary next year.  WCIV
  • On July 30, District 7770 Governor Sandy Morckel spoke at the Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant meeting and urged members to serve with intent while introducing Rotary International’s 'Unite for Good' theme for the 2025–26 fiscal year. She also encouraged Rotarians to support youth initiatives like the Interact Club+ and highlighted local community projects addressing hunger and mentoring youth.  Moultrie News

  • The Shem Creek Shrimp Docks and Processing Facility will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 12 at 9:30 a.m. at 102 Haddrell Street—$3.5 million in upgrades, such as a wider boardwalk and stronger structure, will help ensure safer and more efficient operations.  WCIV

  • Aflac asked a Charleston judge on August 4 to decide who receives the $50,000 life insurance payout from slain executive David Perry as his estate and his brother Charles—accused of his murder—both claim the money.  The Post and Courier

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local officials confirmed that more than 1 million gallons of harmful waste have been removed from the USS Yorktown as part of a long cleanup project to protect the coastline—removing 796,000 gallons of contaminated water and 4,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil since February with substantial completion set for fall.  WCBD

  • On August 6, Rep. Thomas F. Hartnett met with Brigadier General Sally C. Selden—Provost and Dean of The Citadel—to discuss plans for a South Carolina Maritime Academy that will use The Citadel’s framework and local port facilities to help fill maritime industry jobs, and a working group will soon explore next steps.  Moultrie News

  • Adam Adrian, the local hearing specialist and manager at HearUSA in Mount Pleasant, warns that loud music at concerts can cause permanent hearing loss if ear protection is not used—he recommends using earmuffs or earplugs and offers free evaluations at his office on Johnny Dodds Boulevard.  Moultrie News
