ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Traffic on I-526 at the Don Holt Bridge was limited to one lane in both directions on August 4 due to multiple collisions—emergency vehicles are still on site attending a stopped vehicle. The Post and Courier
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 3, Mount Pleasant police arrested 41-year-old Joel Gratton after he jumped from boat to boat and swam in Shem Creek for about an hour to avoid arrest—he was later taken into custody and booked on charges including trespass after notice, public disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and threatening a public official. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Charleston County School District will start the new school year on August 12 with all schools staffed by certified educators earning about $65,000 while funding rises to $36 million for extra student support. The district will pilot a vape detection system—an effort to keep vapes out of classrooms—and add more safety measures like a panic button and school resource officers. WCIV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On August 4, the Town of Mount Pleasant approved plans to extend Mount Pleasant Way by 2600 feet along the IOP Connector and to start other upgrades such as a fire pump replacement, storm water repairs, and traffic calming in the Old Village—staff also backed an environmental strategic plan with work set to begin soon. The projects are aimed at improving non-motorized transit and easing local traffic while protecting affected trees and ensuring school traffic remains uninterrupted. Moultrie News
- ➤ Congresswoman Nancy Mace launched her gubernatorial campaign on August 4 by promising to restore law and order and eliminate the state income tax—she also outlined plans to overhaul the judicial system, boost school choice, and address energy challenges for a stronger South Carolina—.
