CRIME NEWS

  • A homeowner reported a break-in on Fair Sailing Rd on July 30 when she returned at 11 a.m. and found pushed windows and knocked-over plants + police swept the property and collected fingerprints + she said she will press charges.  Moultrie News
  • The Sullivan’s Island Police Department identified the driver of the truck recovered from the water on July 31 and obtained arrest warrants charging him with indecent exposure, dumping litter in excess of 500 pounds, and malicious damage to property valued at $10,000 or more—his identity will be released once he is arrested.  Moultrie News

  • South Carolina Tax-Free Weekend is underway as parents and shoppers can save on sales tax when buying approved back-to-school items—backpacks, pencils, tablets, clothing and dorm room supplies can be purchased without state or local taxes until August 3. Ineligible items include digital cameras, smartphones and jewelry.  WCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Crown Leadership Academy is finalizing preparations for the upcoming school year in its new, customized and expanded campus at 546 Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant—marking a major milestone in its fifteen-year history. The 25,000-square-foot facility features modern tutoring areas, labs, and a media recording studio designed to meet ADA, state, and local codes.  Moultrie News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services opened a coastal photography contest for all photographers to submit coastal images including marshes, beaches or wildlife—photos must be in landscape orientation and uploaded online by August 31.  WCIV

  • Charleston Water System will host a free Citizens Academy in September to show residents how water and wastewater are managed—an event that explains how millions of gallons are handled each day. Sessions run every Tuesday at 4 p.m. from Sept. 9 through Oct. 7 and applications close on Aug. 20—residents should apply soon.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Former NFL star Greg Olsen helped raise over $1 million for MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital on July 31, with patients and families praising the donation. The funds will support pediatric heart programs — including therapy dog care and a program to help patients transition home — to improve treatment services.  WCIV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 16th season of Knight’s Companies Friday Night Rivals, sponsored by Crews Chevrolet, will start on Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. with ten weeks of live high school football games across the Lowcountry that support local schools with a $5,000 grant and a $5,000 scholarship.  WCIV
