- ➤ The East Cooper Kiwanis Club will host a Back-to-School Fishing Tournament on Aug. 23 at the Mount Pleasant Pier to raise funds for youth programs such as Terrific Kids and Key Clubs — families, young anglers, and community supporters are invited to join. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and Mayor Will Haynie will serve as Master of Ceremonies while Pelican’s Snoballs cool participants on the pier. Moultrie News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Henry McMaster signed the South Carolina Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act on July 31 with state leaders present. The law will ban holding phones while driving to reduce accidents— it takes effect Sept. 1 and full enforcement starts Feb. 28. Moultrie News

- ➤ Autism advocate Layla Luna from Just Bee spoke at the Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant on July 23 about the challenges faced by those with autism—she noted CDC data showing one in every 31 children is affected and discussed how part of Rio’s Law allows for license plates that signal an autistic car passenger while her nonprofit partners with Heirloom Cloud to help those on the spectrum find jobs.
