  • Marcus Cripps, a Charleston-based artist and 2023 contest winner, was named the People's Choice Design winner for the 2026 Cooper River Bridge Run after earning community votes with design number 23—his achievement highlights a strong local showing. Racer registration is open at $50 until Aug. 31—registration costs will increase Sept. 1.  WCIV
  • Cathryn Blalock from Lowcountry Orphan Relief discussed the ongoing school supply drive at the WCBD—streaming center, noting needs from backpacks to notebooks for children returning to class. Donations may be dropped off at several locations including Mount Pleasant’s Steven Shell Living and Uptown Cheapskate.  WCBD

CRIME NEWS

  • At 10:20 p.m. on I-26, Quintero Pedro Trejos crashed into a police cruiser while officers helped a disabled vehicle, injuring two officers who were later released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries+westbound lanes between Septima P. Clark Parkway and Mount Pleasant Street reopened shortly after midnight.  WCBD

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grammy-nominated Marcus King will host his family reunion festival in the Lowcountry on Aug. 23 and 24 at Firefly Distillery, with performances by acts such as Jamey Johnson and Molly Tuttle and ticket options available for one or two days. One dollar from each ticket sale will benefit the Curfew Fellowship Fund — supporting music education and programs for sobriety.  WCBD

  • Trident Tech and the College of Charleston have partnered to expand education opportunities—students who earn an associate’s degree in select fields at Trident Tech qualify for the college’s online Bachelor of Professional Studies program—and leaders will announce the program on August 6th at Trident Tech’s Thornley Campus.  WCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant resident Cleary Simpson looked into her daughter Anna’s nerve and muscle troubles and found that Anna had Charcot—Marie—Tooth disease after turning 16. The family then started a research foundation that has raised $25 million and helped fund studies for a new treatment now in clinical trials by Novartis.  Moultrie News
