ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • One direction of the Wando Bridge on Interstate 526 was closed Monday evening after a collision left extensive debris on the westbound lanes — Mount Pleasant Police Department urged drivers to use alternate routes.  WCBD

CULTURE NEWS

  • In colonial Charles Town, merchants on East Bay and Elliott streets welcomed licensed privateers until privateers became pirates after Queen Anne’s War ended, turning looting into a threat to trade. Local leaders arrested many pirates by 1718 and sentenced most to hang along the waterfront—marking the end of an era for the town.  The Post and Courier

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Mount Pleasant Tree Task Force met on July 28 to review plans for protecting the town’s trees under the Community Forest Master Plan. The seven-member group agreed to meet monthly (with the next meeting on Aug. 28 at 8 a.m.) to assess removal permits and boost the tree bank.  Moultrie News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charleston County Elections announced on Monday that the annual 'I Voted!' sticker design contest will invite K-12 students to submit original artwork for fall early voting stickers—submissions will open Aug. 4th at 12 p.m. and close Sept. 12th at 12 p.m. A panel will select five finalists from each grade group and public voting will begin Sept. 22 at noon and end Sept. 26 at noon, with winners receiving a $50 gift card, a certificate and voter engagement gear.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Monday's extreme heat warning led many residents to use Mount Pleasant's new splash pad for relief while local hospitals treated nearly 60 patients for dehydration and other heat illnesses this past weekend—doctors recommend staying indoors, drinking fluids, and limiting outdoor play as Tuesday's advisory runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.  WCIV
  • On July 19, the local fishing tournament Hooked On Miracles donated all proceeds to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. The day before, a sponsor+who owns a 70 foot Viking+ took more than a dozen children offshore for a memorable fishing trip.  WCIV
