COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Carolina’s largest pet adoption event - Petco Love Pick Me! SC - started Friday and will run until June 29 to help 90 shelters and rescue groups find homes for 2,500 dogs and cats.  WCIV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • South Carolina Ports approved a $294 million plan on June 17 to invest in the Navy Base Intermodal Facility, expand Leatherman Terminal, and upgrade Columbus Street Terminal for reliable port service amid global uncertainty—May saw strong increases in container and rail volumes. Port President Barbara Melvin said the investments support efficient cargo flow and prepare the maritime community for future growth.  Moultrie News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Charleston County School District announced four new leadership appointments today, naming Ashley Dorsey as principal at Stono Park Elementary, Katie Houser as interim principal at Midland Park Primary, Kimberly Richards as principal at Hunley Park Elementary, and Kyle Smalls as principal at North Charleston Elementary. The appointed leaders bring years of education experience + they have held key roles in other schools + the district expects these changes to drive academic progress.  Charleston County School District

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network announced the names Ashley and Cooper for a dolphin duo as community members cast votes with every dollar donated — the names honor local rivers, creeks and coastal roots and help fund dolphin monitoring and emergency stranding response.  WCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said that life jackets now display performance levels that show buoyancy with level 70 as the minimum for boaters in inland or calm waters—this change aims to help users select the proper gear for safety.  WCBD
  • The planning commission approved a new Mount Pleasant Towne Centre master plan that could bring up to 421 new homes, more than 87,000 square feet of office space, and 188 hotel rooms if anchor tenants leave—school zoning must be fixed before new housing can be added. The plan, which also includes 60,000 square feet for family entertainment and green space, will be discussed at Town Council on July 8 as some local residents worry about changes to their center.  WCBD
  • Project Cool Breeze is helping seniors stay cool this summer by giving fans and portable air conditioners to those who have qualified, and the first distribution is happening today. State Rep Wendell Gilliard—who started the program in 1999—says only seniors who completed the application will get the equipment.  WCBD
