COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tickets for the Fourth of July Fireworks Blast are on sale now for an Independence Day celebration aboard the historic USS Yorktown at Patriots Point. The event will feature live music plus family-friendly activities with a 20-minute fireworks show over Charleston Harbor from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m., and parking is available on site separately.  WCBD
  • The Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce will honor more than 20 local, state and federal agencies for their work during the May 1st hit-and-run on Sullivan’s Island. The event will be held at noon on June 18 at the Omar Shrine Center during the Chamber’s bi-monthly luncheon—showing the power of teams from different agencies working together.  Moultrie News
  • The Town of Mount Pleasant held a June 10 ribbon-cutting ceremony for Phase 3 of its Memorial Waterfront Park featuring new basketball and pickleball courts, a splash pad, a dog park, and a playground. Mayor Will Haynie said the park, which nods to Mount Pleasant history, took nine years and $7 million to develop — a sign of vision and teamwork.  Moultrie News

  • An off-duty Charleston County Sheriff's Office Master Deputy McKinnon stopped a robbery at Northwoods Mall on Tuesday when he chased and tackled a suspect who grabbed jewelry from a nearby store — the suspect was arrested later by police.  WCIV
  • A judge denied bail for Tyrell Lamont Smith on June 10 when he was accused of fatally shooting sanitation worker Da'Tawn Gatling in North Charleston+ he remains in jail awaiting trial with authorities pointing to his attempted flight after traveling to New York.  The Post and Courier

  • Pinehurst Elementary students unveiled Portraits—Our Untold Stories on May 19 to parents, families, and community partners after a yearlong writing project. The bilingual poetry book, made using George Ella Lyon’s 'I Am From' framework, was celebrated with a signing event and guest performances.  Charleston County School District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, SCDOT is asking residents for input on three alternatives to replace the old bridge over Burden Creek on River Road as officials plan to update it for modern traffic—one option includes a 90-day closure with a 10-mile detour. Officials will accept feedback until Friday, June 13 so they can select a design built with state and federal funds.  WCIV
