- ➤ Lowcountry animal shelters face overcrowding and three groups—Charleston Animal Society, Berkeley Animal Center, and Dorchester Paws—are joining forces to launch the second annual lifesaving adoption event Lowcountry Paws Unite, offering adoption deals for dogs and kittens through Sunday. - ➤ Animal shelters in the Lowcountry faced severe overcrowding as the Charleston Animal Society housed 330 animals on Wednesday—well over its usual capacity, while Dorchester Paws, Berkeley Animal Center, and Pet Helpers on James Island also struggled with high numbers. - ➤ Star Gospel Mission, Charleston’s oldest independent faith-based charity, is expanding programs that provide shelter, meals and support to those facing homelessness in the region. - ➤ Due to the threat of inclement weather, the grand opening celebration for Phase 3 of the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park project scheduled for Wednesday evening was canceled—however, the park is now open with a splash pad, basketball and pickleball courts, a shaded dog park and a fitness area. - ➤ The National Parks Service announced Wednesday that the International African American Museum in Charleston was added to the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network, a group of more than 100 sites that educate visitors about the period after the Civil War. - ➤ The S.C. DMV warned residents about scam texts that falsely claim unpaid traffic tickets – the agency said it never sends messages for payment and urged people to block these texts and use the official website for transactions. WCBD
- ➤ Federal officials are reviewing offshore drilling options in South Carolina coastal waters as part of BOEM's new five-year plan, while state and local leaders say there is little oil and high environmental risks—experts warn that seismic testing may hurt marine life and harm tourism.
