  • Rising expenses have strained everyday budgets in the Lowcountry as families face higher costs for gas, groceries, childcare, and even ice creams. Trident United Way is launching Thrive@Home + family coaching to help stabilize budgets and support 15,000 households by 2035.  Moultrie News
  • Officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department gathered on May 27 to honor retired K-9 Arie, a 14-year-old Belgian Malinois who served from 2013 to 2018 – his handler Lt. Matthew Parks said the loyal dog remained a cherished part of his family. The department extended its condolences to those mourning the loss.  Moultrie News

  • IQ Fiber celebrated the grand opening of its new Charleston operations center on May 27 at 2030 Herbert Street after a six-month renovation (transforming a former warehouse into a modern hub). The facility supports the company’s growing fiber-optic service across Charleston and Mount Pleasant.  Moultrie News

  • Philanthropist Steve Harry launched The ECE Foundation this month (501(c)(3)) to expand youth access to music education through long-term nonprofit partnerships in Charleston and beyond. His decades of mentoring second graders in Mount Pleasant have inspired the effort to offer young people new ways to engage with music.  Moultrie News

  • Trident Literacy Association announced the Eileen Chepenik Scholarship Fund to support adult learners and will celebrate the fund (named for former executive director Eileen Chepenik) with a luncheon on June 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the North Charleston Marriott, 4770 Goer Drive.  Moultrie News
  • Charleston County School District begins a strategic planning and community engagement process with the Joseph P. Riley Jr. Center for Livable Communities this summer. Area residents may share feedback through surveys, focus groups & meetings to shape the district's 2027–2032 Goals ahead of a fall Board review.  Charleston County School District
  • The Charleston County School District Education Foundation announced it awarded $25,000 in microgrants to 28 educators across 24 schools, supporting projects such as a mobile SEL support cart and student podcasting studio. The initiative received 212 applications and will expand in future cycles.  Charleston County School District

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bill Lamson-Scribner from Possum’s Landscape and Pest Control Supply in Mount Pleasant warns that the Lowcountry is facing extreme drought with a 6.5-8 inch rain deficit and advises residents to monitor soil moisture and use proper pest control to protect weakened trees from roach infestations.  Moultrie News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant police are warning parents as students may ride modified e-bikes that exceed legal limits. They impounded 12 bikes near Moultrie Middle School and will increase patrols to promote a safe summer.  WCIV
  • SCDNR is hosting sessions to update anglers if an injunction is lifted for red snapper season. The sessions are June 2 at Butler Marine, June 3 at Crazy Sister Marina, & June 4 at Haddrells Point Tackle in Mount Pleasant, with a virtual session on June 11 at 5:30 p.m.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Respite Care Charleston announced a new cycle of Senior Moments sessions, a 12-week brain health program for people with memory changes or who want to stay sharp. Sessions in Mount Pleasant and James Island include fitness, puzzles, and learning about nutrition (cost: $25 per day).  Moultrie News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wando High School's girls soccer team won the state title by defeating J.L. Mann 2-1 in penalty kicks after regulation and overtime ended scoreless. Coach Shannon Champ led the Warriors to claim their 14th championship and sweet revenge for last year's loss.  Charleston County School District
