COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 88 Club will hold its early-bird meeting on June 3 at Sunrise Bistro (Anna Knapp Plaza, 1039 Johnnie Dodds Blvd) with guest Rep. Kathy Landing, and it scheduled a second session on June 17 featuring Vice Chair Larry Kobrovsky.  Moultrie News
  • Charleston police wrangled an alligator in a neighborhood yesterday during mating season (a video of the encounter has drawn over 200,000 views online) and officials urge residents not to feed or approach the reptile.  WCIV
  • Star Gospel mission previewed its annual fundraiser 'A Walk in Their Shoes' on Wednesday; the event will take place this Sunday to support local efforts for people facing homelessness and raise awareness of the issue.  WCIV
  • Pet Helpers has waived adoption fees for eligible pets as part of an emergency initiative to ease shelter overcrowding. Charleston County residents can adopt animals aged 4 months and older without charges through June 30 at the shelter (open daily from noon to 5 p.m. except on Memorial Day).  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roslin Fields has uplifted middle and high school girls since 1997 with her nonprofit Y.E.S. that offers mentoring, educational activities & college tours for underserved students in the local district.  WCIV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Termite swarmers are common this spring (late March through June) and do not damage homes unless wings are found indoors. Experts advise homeowners to remove debris and secure proper ventilation to reduce termite risks.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Beach Reach shuttle service is starting its sixth year today with a new schedule that now includes Fridays, running from Mount Pleasant Towne Centre to Isle of Palms through Labor Day. The buses have been adjusted to allow safe storage of beach gear + ease parking and traffic issues.  WCIV
  • Berkeley County deputies will boost patrols across Lake Moultrie, the Cooper River, the Wando River and the Tailrace Canal this Memorial Day weekend — preparing for a surge in boating as they warn visitors about hazards like submerged stumps. A new mega boat landing opened recently to welcome more boaters.  WCIV
