COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pet Helpers released a statement on Monday after animal control officers investigated reports of 25 dogs in 18 kennels at a Johns Island residence; the organization cared for five dogs—providing full evaluations and vaccinating three—while details for the remaining animals remain unknown. Officials including Councilmember Joe Boykin and Sheriff Carl Ritchie plan to meet to discuss potential updates to local animal welfare ordinances.  WCIV
  • The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission proclaimed May 19-26 as National Beach Safety Week to remind Lowcountry residents to watch for coastal hazards as summer begins — the commission advised beachgoers to swim near lifeguards, not swim alone, and keep a water watcher nearby to help prevent dangerous situations.  WCIV
  • Jean’s Angels is a local non-profit started ten years ago in memory of Bobby Jean Smith that helps children in hard times, seniors who come to appointments alone, and homeless people with mobile showers, laundry services, hot meals and beds. The group will unveil its next big project on June 1—volunteers also sponsor good students with trips to Disney World if grades are maintained.  WCIV

  • Mount Pleasant police pulled over speeding driver Justin Hudson on Ben Sawyer Boulevard late at night—he was suspected of DUI 2nd and charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine after a strip search found 3.7 grams of white powder.  Moultrie News
  • A May 18 shooting in North Charleston involved a Mount Pleasant officer when police arrived at 2:08 a.m. to find a 28-year-old Hispanic man wounded after a struggle over his firearm—she is now on administrative leave as investigations continue.  Moultrie News
  • Early Sunday, May 18 at around 2 a.m., North Charleston Police responded to a shooting near Patriot Boulevard where an off-duty Mount Pleasant officer was involved in a domestic altercation with her boyfriend that led to a man being shot and taken to a hospital—she is now on administrative leave.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 15th, TeachCharleston and CarolinaCAP celebrated teachers on the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point for completing their three-year alternative certification programs and for earning Rookie Teacher of the Year honors—seven from TeachCharleston and three from CarolinaCAP completed the program while nine teachers were recognized as top first-year educators. This event marked a year-end milestone for the district's educators.  Charleston County School District

  • Local community leaders in Charleston say plastic pellet pollution is worsening as increased plastic production and new facility proposals add risks of spills and leakages; volunteers recently collected over 3,000 pellets during waterfront cleanups + future efforts will focus on hand-cleaning in vulnerable marsh areas.  WCIV
