COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Four of SC Ports' ship-to-shore cranes got new names today after over 450 students from Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties entered the 'Name the Cranes' contest; winners from five schools were honored at the Wando Welch Terminal with plaques, a tour, and $500 for their schools.  Moultrie News
  • A viral video shows officers wrestling an alligator in the Park West neighborhood as warmer weather and mating season prompt more sightings. Officials urge locals to avoid handling or feeding the reptiles (which can reduce their natural caution).  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Thomas C. Cario Middle School Band performed at the SCMEA Conference on Feb. 7 at the USC Alumni Center. Selected among 48 groups, the performance was a high honor that highlighted strong support from school, parents, and educators (a nod to the local music tradition).  Charleston County School District

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oceanside Collegiate Academy has partnered with Mount Pleasant Airport to launch a new program that lets high school students aged 17 and older earn a private pilot certification. The semester-long course requires 50 to 60 flight hours and a solo cross-country trip and prepares them for aviation careers.  Moultrie News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina saltwater anglers will have a longer Atlantic red snapper season from July 1 to Aug. 31, 2026 under a new pilot program by the Department of Natural Resources — anglers must register for a free harvest permit and report catches using the VESL mobile app.  WCIV
  • The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network (LMMN) is asking the public to protect Koa, a rare bottlenose dolphin missing its tail flukes seen in Charleston waters as boating increases into summer. The network advises boaters and waterfront visitors to maintain a safe distance to help the dolphin survive.  Moultrie News

  • Lowcountry native Julia Phillips was named the 2025-26 ECHL Athletic Trainer of the Year and will help the Stingrays as they prepare for their season finale against the Florida Everblades. Phillips returned to the South after stints in Washington and Kansas and brings vital hockey experience to the team.  WCIV
