  • Local Mexican restaurants have set up donation jars and a GoFundMe to raise money for repatriating Guillermo Quintero-Camacho’s remains—he died on May 7 after being rescued from Breach Inlet—with community funds also supporting funeral costs for Yoselin Lopez-Perez.  The Post and Courier

CRIME NEWS

  • Janet Crouch, a 37-year-old salon stylist from Mount Pleasant, was fatally shot by someone she knew in her West Ashley home on Mother's Day — police charged two suspects on May 14.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Charleston County School District Board of Trustees recognized several groups of employees last night at the Committee of the Whole meeting—honoring school nurses during National Nurses Week and the Top Five Teachers of the Year, including Teacher of the Year Katie Scheaffer. Sandra Cannon of West Ashley High School also received the Jessie W. Little Distinguished Achievement Award for her mentorship of new educators.  Charleston County School District
  • On May 13, Mount Pleasant Town Council honored 10 local Teacher of the Year honorees from the Charleston County School District at its meeting. Councilmember Daniel Brownstein and CCSD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Luke Clamp praised the educators—stressing their work after school hours—and thanked them for impacting student lives.  Moultrie News
  • Noah White is a fifth grader at Hunley Park Elementary who shows kindness and leadership by hosting fundraisers, mentoring peers, and excelling in his studies + sports. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant upgraded road safety by installing new flashing beacons along Mathis Ferry Road at the intersections with Milldenhall Road and Eagle Street—features designed to help drivers see pedestrians during dark hours. A celebration was held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. to unveil the beacons as part of the Safe Streets Program and Safe Routes to School Initiative, which include a reaffirmed $16 million grant from the US Department of Transportation.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and the South Carolina Department of Public Health is boosting stroke prevention efforts — urging residents to learn the signs of a stroke. Officials noted that the state ranks in the top 10 for stroke deaths and rural areas face higher risks — experts say quick treatment is key.  WCIV
