  • The Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Program in Charleston County seeks volunteers to advocate for children in family court; free online training is available on June 22 and July 21 and applicants must be 21+ with a clean criminal record and a 5 to 6 hour monthly commitment.  Moultrie News
  • Mount Pleasant Town Council honored two unified recreation teams Tuesday night after their strong show at state tournaments. The Stingers defended their basketball title in Columbia and the Piranhas earned numerous swim medals — a win that highlights community inclusion.  WCIV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Saltwater Cowboys, a waterfront restaurant along Shem Creek, will close its dock at 9 p.m. after a fatal boating accident — a private measure to boost safety — and will join Monday's meeting of restaurants to discuss similar policies; town officials stress change is not part of a townwide curfew.  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, fifth-grader James Guttentag earned an award for guessing 63 fish in a bowl at the Blessing of the Fleet celebration at the Memorial Waterfront Park. He received a Wonder Works gift card and was pictured with his father at the Chamber office.  Moultrie News
  • More than 30 Burke High School student musicians will perform at the Spoleto Festival USA opening ceremony on May 22 in front of Charleston City Hall + lead a procession to celebrate local talent and cultural heritage.  Charleston County School District

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thomas Beck of E.B. Ellington and Brooke McLoughlin with Jennie Church from Johns Island received Berkeley Electric Cooperative Bright Ideas Grants to launch new projects. EB Ellington will build math skills through interactive games and Johns Island will add mobile STEAM stations (awarded at Cypress Gardens on April 25).  Charleston County School District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Census Bureau estimates released today show that South Carolina’s population grew fastest in smaller cities while large hubs gained few residents and Mount Pleasant lost over 500 people between mid-2024 and mid-2025.  The Post and Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Novant Health East Cooper Medical Center marks its 40th anniversary during National Hospital Week with special events including a Family Fun Fair and 1980s-themed dress-up on May 16. The facility (opened in 1986) has grown with Mount Pleasant (from 15,000 residents to over 95,000) into a regional care destination.  Moultrie News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Freshman Davis Crowley from St. John's High School won the SCHSL state championship at Chester Golf Club on May 11 by finishing six strokes ahead with a round of 2-over-74, making him the first individual state title winner from his school.  Charleston County School District
  • On Tuesday night, the Charleston RiverDogs rallied in the eighth inning at the Joe to beat the Cannon Ballers 5-3 (key hits by Caden Bodine and Dean Moss sparked the rally) as they improved their Carolina League South lead.  WCIV
