ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On May 6, two people rescued from the waters between Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island were identified as 18-year-old Yoselin Lopez-Perez and 28-year-old Guillermo Quintero-Camacho after Sullivan's Island Fire Rescue responded at about 3:50 p.m.—both died after hospital care and the Isle of Palms Police Department is investigating the incident. - ➤ The Charleston County Coroner's Office identified 18-year-old Yoselin Lopez-Perez and 28-year-old Guillermo Quintero-Camacho as the swimmers who drowned after being rescued from Breach Inlet Tuesday at 3:50 p.m.—Lopez-Perez was pronounced dead at MUSC at 4:22 p.m. and Quintero-Camacho at 1:14 a.m. Wednesday. - ➤ On May 5, a driver in a (2005 silver Toyota Camry) sped on the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and swerved before being stopped at the Meeting Street ramp, where officers found him with two open containers (Modelo) and a .28 breath sample that led to his arrest on a DUI 1st charge. Moultrie News

- ➤ Katie Scheaffer, a science teacher at Thomas C. Cario Middle School, was named the Charleston County School District's 2025 Teacher of the Year on May 9 after being chosen from over 80 candidates. Scheaffer said she would work with fellow teachers to create new classroom strategies and will lead the Teacher of the Year Roundtable and Forum during the next school year — a role following last year's honoree. - ➤ The General Assembly passed Senate Bill 156, a law that makes it a felony for anyone who distributes fentanyl when it leads to a death—convictions can result in up to 30 years in prison. - ➤ Charleston County officials are preparing for changes to disaster relief funding as hurricane season nears. Officials said a new threshold—set at $50 million—would have limited federal aid for past disasters and may reduce future support. WCBD
- ➤ Lawmakers passed Senate Bills 28 and 29 on Thursday to make it a felony to create, distribute, or possess AI-generated sexual images including child sexual abuse material in South Carolina—state Attorney General Alan Wilson and advocates call the move a major victory for victims as the bills now await Governor Henry McMaster’s signature.
