  • The therapy dog Riggs — a 7-year-old Lab/Boxer mix — bounced back from depression after his owner died on Dec. 29 and resumed his visits to Roper St. Francis Hospital in early April. Volunteers say he now comforts patients and visitors weekly at the hospital.  Moultrie News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kallyn Long, Miss South Carolina High School America — who lost her hearing in a freak roller coaster accident — appeared on Good Morning Charleston during spring break and shared how she uses her platform to support disability awareness by writing her book Cordelia and Me; she will compete later in June in Little Rock for the national title.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eric Wilkinson, the choir director at Wando High School, was named a CCSD 2025 Teacher of the Year finalist after 24 years of teaching music and running an award-winning program that teaches students multiple languages and life skills — he will use his platform to show how fine arts can build better school culture and student growth.  Charleston County School District
  • The Charleston County School District has received a $5,000 grant from No Kid Hungry to help feed more students over the summer. The district will use the funds to purchase yard signs — to inform rural families of new meal pick-up spots — and launch a service starting June 2 that aims to serve at least 10 percent more students than last summer.  Charleston County School District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers on US 17 northbound experienced lane closures due to Ashley River Crossing Bridge construction; lanes were closed from near the intersection with Albermarle Road to the exit ramp at Lockwood Blvd between 9 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday—travelers were advised to use caution in the work zone.  WCBD

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wando High School won the state title in boys’ lacrosse on May 3 in Irmo by beating Dorman 18-1—this win set a record with a 17-goal lead and marks their second straight title. The team ended the season 16-2 after outscoring playoff opponents 54-4.  Charleston County School District
