BUSINESS NEWS

  • Breeze Airways launched nonstop flights linking Charleston and Atlantic City on May 6. The twice-weekly service offers fares starting at $49 and gives Lowcountry travelers an easy way to visit Atlantic City.  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens will end its annual Fright Nights event after over 20 years as it shifts to family-friendly programming and cuts rising operational costs. The change will let the plantation invest in year-round experiences for guests of all ages.  WCIV
  • Caliente Ballroom — a newly opened dance school on 1116 Graddick Rd — offers professional dance instruction for every level. It hosts monthly socials and will hold an annual showcase on Nov. 14 featuring choreographed performances.  Moultrie News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The local school district named Sean Bishton as principal of St. John’s High School effective July 1. Bishton brings over 30 years of teaching experience (including his time as principal at Pelion High School) and will work with Vanessa Denney for a smooth transition for students, staff and families.  Charleston County School District
  • Charleston County School District is featured in a project by Columbia University’s CPRL that spotlights 12 districts with gains in reading and math; the case study titled Built to Last details improvements in assessment scores and will appear in a final report on May 19.  Charleston County School District
  • A College of Charleston adjunct professor and students use AI to rank area restaurants with Taste Signal. The project draws on 12 data sources to list the top three options — it began as a classroom challenge and attracted 2,000 users in its first month.  WCIV
  • Staff from A.C. Corcoran Elementary and Ladson Elementary hosted Parent University on May 2 to help families learn testing expectations & curriculum details, sharing a light breakfast and Chick-Fil-A lunch; Superintendent Anita Huggins and Principal Chris Holbrook said the event strengthened school-home ties.  Charleston County School District
  • Barrett Reese has been named principal of Academic Magnet High School, effective July 1 (per Charleston County School District) after a record of strong academic results at Early College High. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The South Carolina Aquarium admitted seven injured sea turtles after stranding incidents along the coast and provided urgent care yesterday. The facility is running low on medical supplies and asks locals to donate needed items via its Amazon gift registry.  WCIV
  • Ted Turner, whose long-time love for land conservation included preserving over 2 million acres and pioneering conservation easements, died May 6. His work helped protect historic sites such as the ACE Basin and St. Phillips Island, leaving a lasting environmental impact on the region.  The Post and Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • All four hospitals at Roper St. Francis Healthcare (Roper Hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis, Mount Pleasant, and Berkeley) earned an A Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group during spring grading, and the announcement came May 6 as the system celebrated National Nurses Week.  Moultrie News
