  • A Florida man was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for orchestrating an alleged retail fraud scheme in Charleston and was ordered to pay over $1.1 million in restitution—he was arrested in July 2024 after investigators uncovered a multi-state effort to defraud home improvement stores.  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The International African American Museum will host its Jubilee Soiree on June 21—an annual fundraising gala celebrating a century of Black Beauty from 1925 to 2025 with live entertainment, special guests, a live auction, and more. Annual member pre-sales start May 1 as general admission tickets go on sale May 5 and proceeds will support future exhibitions, educational programs, and community outreach.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Angie Greene—school counselor at James Simons Montessori School—will retire this year after 40 years of service, and a district reception later will honor all retiring educators.   • Crystal Herron, a top five finalist for Teacher of the Year at Charleston Charter School for Math and Science, earned the recognition on May 5 by bridging hands-on learning with partnerships from local agencies—she has worked with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Forest Service to bring real-world science into the classroom.   • SC Works Trident will hold its annual 'Your Next Step' career fair on Wednesday at the Charleston Area Convention Center for graduating high school seniors from Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties. Attendees should dress professionally and bring updated resumes as companies like MUSC Health — Dominion Energy — and Hendrick Automotive plan on conducting on-site interviews and offering possible job opportunities.  WCBD

  • Seven Mount Pleasant police officers were honored on May 5 at Town Hall for completing five- or ten-year milestones as Police Chief Mark Arnold applauded their roles in recruitment, training, investigations, and school security—each officer was recognized for their dedicated service.  Moultrie News

  • Twin brothers Tyler and Austin Jones from Fort Dorchester became major league umpires on Sunday; Tyler made his debut at a doubleheader between the Cardinals and Mets while Austin called balls and strikes in Boston–a historic first for the majors.
