COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lowcountry Mediation Center announced its rebrand and expansion today to extend affordable conflict resolution services beyond Charleston, naming Angela E. Johnson as its first Executive Director. The organization said its updated look will help serve historically marginalized communities across the region (enhancing access to fair alternatives to court).  Moultrie News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The retirement of the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge 19 years ago prompts a look back at the Lowcountry’s first revolution in 1719—when colonists peacefully replaced proprietary rule using Francis Younge’s rediscovered pamphlet as key evidence. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant Waterworks partnered with CCSD's after-school program Kaleidoscope for Drinking Water Week (May 3-9) to teach elementary and middle school students about water conservation through hands-on lab visits and an art contest; students' work will be displayed at the facility on Rifle Range Road.  Charleston County School District
  • Anthony Galavotti from Lucy Beckham High School was named a Top Five Finalist for District Teacher of the Year—an honor that highlights his kid-first approach in both teaching and coaching while building trust with every student.  Moultrie News
  • Academic Magnet High School senior Madeline Moye received the Peter McKellar III Memorial Soccer Scholarship on May 2 at the Patriots Point Soccer Complex (incoming Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant President Andrew McGlaughon presented the award).  Moultrie News
  • Patrick Martin, an English teacher and Teacher Cadet instructor at Charleston County School of the Arts, was named CCSD Teacher of the Year today during a surprise visit by district officials, and he will lead the Teacher of the Year Roundtable in the upcoming school year.  WCIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant leaders have set aside around $5 million with Dominion Energy to bury power lines in neighborhoods like Hobcaw to reduce outages during storms. One project along Mathis Ferry Road is underway while another near Ben Sawyer Boulevard remains in design due to cost & space challenges.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mental health advocate Kyndal Ray Edwards, who has walked nearly 10,000 miles over three years across 28 states, has reached Charleston. He will use his journey to raise awareness for mental health and support those facing depression.  WCIV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Citadel basketball announced that Ramel Bethea, a 30-year-old veteran and father transferring from Wisconsin–Green Bay, will join the Bulldogs this fall to add discipline and leadership to the team (marking a unique chapter in local college hoops).  WCIV
