CRIME NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant police are searching for a missing 73-year-old white man named John Robert Williams, who was last seen leaving his residence on Equestrian Drive at 3:15 p.m. wearing black pants, a long-sleeved black shirt and a blue and cream hat; officers have entered him in NCIC and are patrolling the area.  Moultrie News
  • Sullivan's Island residents sheltered in place after a car struck a child and an adult near Sunrise Presbyterian Church just before 1 p.m. on May 1, sending them to the hospital while a second child was treated and released—police continue searching for the armed, heavy-set white man seen on Jasper Boulevard wearing a red T-shirt and dark shorts.  The Post and Courier
  • On April 29, David Perry's children filed a civil suit against their uncle Charles Perry, who was charged with their father's murder in December, alleging wrongful death, assault + battery while seeking punitive damages as his criminal case unfolds.  The Post and Courier
  • Early Thursday morning, Mount Pleasant Police Department officers arrested Ryan Whitaker on DUI charges after he collided with a light post on Mathis Ferry Road and fled the scene; officials reported his vehicle had damaged headlights and the road remained closed until noon (pending further investigation).  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 30, Thomas C. Cario Middle School became the first school in over two decades for CCSD to be named a Palmetto’s Finest School—an honor that recognizes its steady academic gains, strong music and STEM programs, and community support. This distinction, awarded by SCASA, marks only the sixth time a CCSD school has earned the title.  Moultrie News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Town of Mount Pleasant revised building restrictions on accessory structures effective May 1, raising ADU limits from 15 to 25 feet and office-over-garage limits from 20 to 25 feet in the Old Village—prompting local resident Sean Barnes of Docks Unlimited to warn that taller builds on Barbara Street will block views and invade privacy. The change will be further discussed at the May 5 Planning Committee meeting while town planning director Michele Reed explained the move was meant to create uniformity in building heights.  Moultrie News
