ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A box truck crashed into a utility pole on Highway 17 at Belk Drive in Mount Pleasant Tuesday morning, causing police to close the northbound lanes and ask drivers to use an alternate route—no injuries were reported.  WCBD

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Fresh Market is set to open its newest store in Mount Pleasant today on Bowman Road—marking its first Charleston area location and its 12th South Carolina store in the last six months. A grand opening celebration with giveaways and samples is scheduled for Saturday morning, May 3 at 7:45 a.m.—bringing extra excitement to the debut.  WCIV

CRIME NEWS

  • A federal judge on April 29 sentenced former Schuf USA accounting executive Katherine Duska (55) to five years probation after she pleaded guilty to stealing over $265,000 from the company and ordered her to repay $191,000, noting her severe health issues.  The Post and Courier

FINANCE NEWS

  • South Carolinians must file their tax returns by May 1 as an automatic extension was granted due to Hurricane Helene's impact last year—this extension also covers 2025 estimated payments. Residents who are not ready to file should consider requesting an extension.  WCBD

SPORTS NEWS

  • The CCSD Board of Trustees recognized Oakland Elementary School's archery team— the district's first elementary team led by PE teacher April Blanton— for qualifying for the National Archery in the Schools Program national tournament. In their second year, the Orcas finished 15th in bullseye and 11th in IBO at the state tournament in February and archer Eliott Gries, who placed seventh and fifth in those events, will compete individually in Louisville on May 9 and 10.  Charleston County School District
  • East Cooper Habitat for Humanity said its Pickleball Tournament will take place on Friday, September 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Crush Yard on S Morgans Point Road in Mount Pleasant, and sponsorships remain available to support the cause.  Moultrie News
  • Mount Pleasant native Andrew Novak won his first PGA Tour event at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans after coming one stroke short at the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island earlier this week—his victory raises hopes for his Ryder Cup future. His best friend, Air Force pilot Kyle Spencer, said he celebrated watching the win on TV.  WCIV
