  • Members of The 88 Club will meet on May 7 at 7 a.m. at Sunrise Bistro in Mount Pleasant to hear guest speaker Brad Morrison (Director of Transportation for the town) while paying for their own breakfast. The club meets the first and third Wednesdays monthly (May 21 will feature former CofC Head Soccer Coach Ralph Lundy) and offers these early-bird sessions as a chance to learn more about local topics.  Moultrie News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant fire crews fought a garage blaze in the Hamlin Community—located on the 1500 block of Dunhill Court—around 2:30 p.m. Friday, and emergency services did not report any injuries or further details about the house fire.  WCIV

  • The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is asking local residents to share tips in the case of Keonna Brown, who was fatally shot early on May 26, 2024 at a graduation party on Tremont Avenue in Ladson—fewer than a dozen witnesses have spoken to detectives so far.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brooks Burns Wetmore, a senior at Charleston County School of the Arts, won the National Merit Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Memorial Scholarship—she is the only public school student in the Lowcountry among nine SC seniors to earn this corporate-sponsored award.  Charleston County School District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council reported a 35% rise in referrals and a 57% increase in admissions at the Tri-County Crisis Stabilization Center since 2023. The center now offers 24/7 crisis services to residents dealing with mental health, substance use and homelessness issues — a win for county support.  WCIV
  • Representative Spencer Wetmore and members of the Tri-County Human Trafficking Task Force proposed legislation at the State House that will add one hour of human trafficking content to existing medical training. The bill, supported by Solicitors Scarlett Wilson and David Pascoe and Sheriffs Carl Ritchie, Duane Lewis and Sam Richardson (its lead sponsors), aims to help healthcare workers better identify trafficking victims.  Moultrie News

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr announced at a downtown Charleston meeting that the federal government will expand access to gene therapy treatments for Medicaid patients with sickle cell disease. Thirty-five states including South Carolina have applied to join the new payment model & local officials praised the effort as a step to lower costs while improving care.  WCBD
