  • County Parks launched a redesigned website (charlestoncountyparks.com) to help locals explore park options with a Park Finder, events calendar, and feature stories that guide park adventures.  Moultrie News
  • Carolina Children’s Charity hosts its Third Annual Golf Tournament presented by Vertical Bridge on June 8 at Daniel Island Club with a 10 a.m. shotgun start on the Ralston Creek course. The event features golf, course activities & an after-party to help local children with special health needs.  Moultrie News

  • Fire crews from St. Johns Fire District and the Charleston Fire Department responded Thursday to an active woods fire near Zelasko Drive and Maybank Highway that produced heavy smoke in the area.  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Lowcountry family reexamines the legacy of WWII soldier James DiMaggio in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Joan Smith studies letters (he earned a Purple Heart and was declared missing in action in 1944) to keep his memory alive on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Harbor View Elementary received the Palmetto’s Finest Award from SCASA on Apr. 23 for strong programs and community support - joining Laurel Hill Primary and Lucy Beckham High as finalists and marking the district’s second consecutive win.  Charleston County School District
  • Charleston County School District students won five corporate sponsored National Merit Scholarships from three schools. The awards were announced this week by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and include renewable college funding & annual stipends.  Charleston County School District
  • On April 9, TTC students showcased their skills at Thornley Campus in North Charleston by demonstrating climbing techniques, maintenance & repair, and pole-top rescue in front of local utility partners; several received job offers based on their performance.  Moultrie News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant Planning Department is reviewing tree removal and replanting plans at Gary Santos Park on Rifle Range Road as part of construction that will add court gymnasiums and lighted fields expected to finish in fall. An April 21 GREEN Commission meeting outlined 4,883 removals, 4,072 retentions, and 367 trees.  Moultrie News

HEALTH NEWS

  • On April 23, local nonprofit The Way There & Back received a $20,000 grant from the Roper Saint Francis Physicians Endowment to expand rides for essential medical appointments and hospital discharge follow-ups, a move that will help bridge transportation gaps for community members.  Moultrie News
