  • On April 19, the Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant gathered at Lowcountry Food Bank to fill lunch bags for families facing food hardships. The group packaged food (as part of Backpack Buddies) and boxed meals (for shipment to area schools) to reduce food insecurity in East Cooper.  Moultrie News
  • The South Carolina Department of Public Health is celebrating 10 years of its Fruit and Vegetable Outlet Inventory—an effort that maps farmers markets, roadside markets, and mobile markets to help residents access fresh produce.   • An unrestrained Toyota Tacoma driver died at the scene after the truck hit a Ford F-150 from behind on Davison Road around 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon+ two occupants in the Ford were injured as both vehicles went off the road.  WCBD

  • Mount Pleasant's new Fresh Market on Bowman Road will open Wednesday, April 30, with a grand opening celebration set for Saturday, May 3. The event begins with a bread-breaking ceremony at 7:45 a.m.—free giveaways and special discounts will be offered—and doors open at 8 a.m. with an 80 pound Parmesan cheese wheel event at 9 a.m.  WCIV

CRIME NEWS

  • Antoine Fitzgerald, 53, of Goose Creek was arrested last week after he allegedly jumped the security gate at Boeing’s Charleston County facility—he attacked three employees by striking one on the face and injuring another’s back before a bystander restrained him—he now faces three counts of third-degree assault and battery.  WCBD

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in South Carolina fell by 4.9 cents in the last week with motorists paying about $2.67 per gallon on Sunday — the lowest price hit $2.19 on Easter Sunday. Nationwide, prices dropped 3.4 cents to about $3.10 per gallon as oil prices begin to rise.  WCIV

  • Mary Ford Early Learning and Family Center celebrated Week of the Young Child with a series of hands-on activities for students—featuring music, dramatic play, and art events.   • Nora got a life-saving heart transplant at MUSC and celebrated her ninth birthday on James Island—she marked the day with family and friends. The new heart came from an organ donor—another family's difficult decision that now gives hope to children waiting for transplants.  Moultrie News
