- ➤ Charleston Animal Society is working with Joye Law Firm and Adams Outdoor to offer free spay and neuter services for 150 pets as part of the Charleston Paw Project, with winners chosen in three waves on May 20, Aug. 26, and Oct. 21—this effort will help reduce pet overpopulation and boost animal health. - ➤ Charleston County Parks will host its Inclusive Superhero Dance Party on Wednesday, May 7 from 6–8 p.m. at the Cooper River Room at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park—inviting people with disabilities, their families, and caregivers to enjoy music by DJ Nick Zareski, pizza, and refreshments—with early registration at $4 per person and on-site registration at $5. - ➤ Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston announced its public phase of the Expanding Hope campaign to support families with critically ill children after turning many away because of space limits. - ➤ Community activists gathered Friday morning in front of the courthouse on Broad Street as the trial of former deputy Emily Pelletier continued for charges stemming from the May 2022 crash that killed Stephania Dantzler and her two daughters—organizers said their protest challenged claims that blamed the victims for their own deaths. - ➤ Former Charleston County deputy Emily Pelletier testified in her trial for three counts of reckless homicide after a May 8 collision on U.S. Highway 17 when she sped at 73 mph and failed to stop at a sign—resulting in the fatal crash that claimed a mother and her two daughters. - ➤ Charleston County Public Works is using a no-dig trenchless method to repair old stormwater pipes in the county, which helps avoid road damage and traffic delays.
