  • On April 17, community members gathered along Shem Creek to unveil the Captain Wayne Magwood Fisherman’s Memorial honoring the late local shrimping legend with Mayor Will Haynie speaking and tribute from his daughter Tressy Magwood Mellichamp. Over 150 donations from locals totaling over $100,000 helped fund the memorial + other community leaders such as Dr. John Panagiotou, Susie Chisolm, and Sen. Chip Campsen participated in the ceremony.  Moultrie News

  • In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Geoff Weber—founder of Heirloom Cloud Corporation—is creating job opportunities for autistic individuals in Mount Pleasant by already hiring four and planning to expand his workforce over the next two years.  Moultrie News

CRIME NEWS

  • Antiwayne Jabar Rouse was found guilty of drug trafficking, failing to stop for blue lights, and possessing a weapon during a violent crime and was sentenced to 25 years in prison (the verdict followed a January 23 chase on International Boulevard in North Charleston where officers recovered drugs, cash, and a gun).  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tickets for Charleston Wine + Food's Summer Sizzle series went on sale April 17 at 11 a.m. The series will run from May through July and offers a lineup of culinary events such as hands-on classes and outdoor gatherings—each event designed to celebrate local flavors and community ties.  Moultrie News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New blue crabbing rules for recreational crabbers will take effect on July 1 — limits include one bushel per person and a requirement for escape rings on crab traps to help protect blue crab populations. One local commercial crabber said he lost $600 a month due to a license issue and urged the department to review measures for commercial fisheries.  WCIV
  • Charleston County is using a trenchless no-dig method to repair aging stormwater pipes and fill sinkholes with minimal disruption to residents today — crews have already finished several repairs in neighborhoods such as Woodside Manor and Capri Isle.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital opened its new EmPATH unit in Charleston, the first dedicated space for children's mental health care to provide quick psychiatric evaluations and treatment; doctors said the unit will reduce long wait times and gather data to improve future care (plans include expanding services to adult patients statewide).  WCIV
  • Krystal Cau of We Are Sharing Hope SC spoke at the Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant meeting on April 9 and explained that a registered donor can save up to eight lives and improve up to 75 lives through organ and tissue donations. She also cleared up common myths about donor eligibility and reassured that donor registration does not affect emergency care.  Moultrie News
