COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant Towne Centre hosts Play Dayz, a free event for children 10 and under at The Oaks on May 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. The event features face painting, balloon art and snacks from Delights Desserts + Coffee, with sessions on the first Tuesday every month through October.  Moultrie News
  • Star Gospel Mission has outlined its big 2026 goals to help people facing homelessness in the Lowcountry (new outreach programs are planned). The organization will roll out enhanced support services to boost local help.  WCIV
  • Joint Base Charleston announced that Carrie Knotts, a teacher and PLTW instructor at Cario Middle School, has been named this year’s Charleston Airshow Key Influencer and will fly on a US Navy Blue Angels F/A-18 Super Hornet on April 29 (she earned 15 nominations from teachers, parents, and family members).  Moultrie News

  • Dutch Bros Coffee opened a new location in Mount Pleasant at the former Clutch Coffee Bar space today, expanding the chain's footprint in the state. The Oregon-based brand now operates over 1,000 locations across 25 states & offers its popular menu to local residents.  The Post and Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • A memorial honoring the 32 USS Laffey sailors killed in Okinawa in 1945 is held today at Patriots Point. The ceremony at 11 a.m. aboard USS Yorktown — overlooking USS Laffey under repair — features a name reading, a moment of silence, and brief remarks.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Mar. 6 at Burke High School, The Dudes from Stiles Point Elementary won the District Book Battle and received the Wendy Taylor Memorial Trophy in a quiz bowl for fourth- and fifth-graders. CCSD honored educators Leslie Cooper (retiring teacher librarian), Jennie Church and Christy James.  Charleston County School District
  • At Wando High School on April 15, 15 student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to play college sports — commitments include colleges like Louisville, USC Upstate, and North Greenville.  Moultrie News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Transportation officials approved plans today to acquire land at the fairgrounds in Ladson for a park-and-ride lot while the board expanded the free Beach Reach Shuttle to include Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning the week before Memorial Day.  WCIV
  • Gov. Henry McMaster signed a law that will lower income tax rates starting in 2026 by replacing a three-tier system with two brackets—taxpayers pay 1.99% on incomes up to $30,000 and 5.21% above—to ease residents’ burdens while future cuts depend on revenue growth.  WCIV
