  • Ben & Jerry's is celebrating Free Cone Day today by giving loyal ice cream fans free cones at any Scoop Shop and offering flavors like Phish Food and Mango. The chain aims to exceed one million scoops this year after record turnout last year—fans may return as often as they like.  WCIV
  • Mount Pleasant residents can enjoy top-notch BBQ pork at the annual Holy Smoke BBQ fundraiser hosted by the Men’s Club of Isle of Palms United Methodist Church, which will return on May 3. Orders will be available at the drive-through (11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and proceeds will support five local charities (East Cooper Community Outreach, Meals on Wheels, One80Place, HALOS and My Sister’s House).  Moultrie News

  • A driver died early Monday when his vehicle ran off River Road near Flossy Lane on Johns Island—deputies said he hit a tree and was unrestrained at the scene as the investigation continues.  WCBD

  • A local entertainer was arrested on a DUI 1st charge after making an improper wide turn from Shem Drive onto Coleman Boulevard on April 5—police noted his slurred speech and erratic driving during the stop.  Moultrie News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mount Pleasant Library will host a seven‐week series of musical film screenings every Saturday at 1:30 p.m. starting April 19 (featuring films like Mary Poppins Returns and Wicked) and will launch summer screenings from June 7 until July 26 as part of its Movies Around the World program.  Moultrie News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Keely Telfer of Big Brother Big Sisters of the Lowcountry explained the benefits of matching local kids with caring adult mentors at the Rotary Club meeting on April 2 in Mount Pleasant. The program has paired 271 children so far and shows high satisfaction among both mentors & kids as it works to help more youth in the future.  Moultrie News
  • Come Back Shack is partnering with the Charleston County School District to raise funds for free student lunches on May 7 at Mount Pleasant and North Charleston locations. The drive will donate 20% of food and t-shirt sales (with extra donations given in full) to support the LOCAL campaign that aims to reduce student lunch debt.  Moultrie News

FINANCE NEWS

  • Local CPA Doug Snyder explained the difference between tax deductions and credits and advised residents to gather paperwork before the filing deadlines—April 15 for regular filers or May 1 for those affected by the hurricane. He noted that unused tax credits can roll over to the next return.  WCIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council unveiled its 2024 annual report Monday, showing that the average jail population at Al Cannon Detention Center is 1,114 with a high number of pretrial detainees and frequent charges like DUI 1st and shoplifting. The report gathered data from 17 local sources—such as Mount Pleasant police—and noted a 57% rise in crisis service admissions along with a growing case backlog, which officials say will guide future improvements in the system.  WCIV
  • Since taking office in January, Sheriff Carl Ritchie has improved community safety and refined operations, recording a 12% rise in arrests and nearly filling 13 School Resource Officer positions in his first 90 days. He has built ties with 16 mayors and enhanced detention center safety with new staff and equipment.  WCIV
