COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Walmart and Sam’s Club run the Fight Hunger. Spark Change. campaign from April 6 to May 3 to help local food banks in coastal South Carolina. The campaign offers in-store and online ways to donate — rounding up totals or buying marked items to support Feeding America partners.  Moultrie News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officials warn that rip current conditions remain high at Folly Beach through Thursday after a Sunday drowning incident; lifeguards, off-duty responders, and emergency crews attended the scene while urging beachgoers to swim near rescue support & check weather updates before heading out.  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Horlbeck family has donated thousands of historical documents to the South Carolina Historical Society that trace 200 years of Charleston history. The collection includes early building records (and Civil War accounts) that offer new insights into the family’s legacy and the region’s past.  The Post and Courier

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in South Carolina climbed this week, with the average at $3.78 per gallon as of Monday (GasBuddy surveyed 3,028 stations), and analysts warn global oil disruptions may push prices even higher if tensions persist.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Judge Robert Bonds dismissed a motion for a temporary restraining order filed by Dr. Brian McClure after the school board nomination meeting, saying McClure did not show that harm was imminent. The district said it will continue its work with a focus on students.  WCIV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Apr. 6, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officials and volunteers from Wounded Nature—Working Veterans dismantled 17 abandoned boats near Johns Island to clear waterways and improve safety; officials say cleanup is ongoing with 61 additional vessels removed so far.  WCIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Joint Base Charleston cancelled the May 2-3 air show due to increased operational requirements from the war in Iran and will instead host a one-day performance by the Navy's Blue Angels over Charleston Harbor south of the Cooper River Bridge between downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant.  The Post and Courier
  • Gov. McMaster signed the Smart Heart Act to boost school cardiac preparedness by requiring defibrillators, drills and trained teams at athletic venues; the law takes effect July 1 and will be implemented in the 2027 — 2028 school year for public schools and competing private ones.  WCIV

  • Local buyers face rising house prices from rapid growth and limited infrastructure (according to broker Bob Brennaman of the Brennaman Group) as experts note that national economic pressures on energy and mortgage rates add to the challenge.  WCIV
