Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 1st of April.
Good morning, Mount Pleasant.
Mount Pleasant’s Waterfront Park nears completion after seven years of delays from weather and the pandemic—city officials plan to open it in early May after a two-week curing of the final coat and some landscaping touch-ups.
The park will include a splashpad, dog park, and exercise area while its parking lot will open later when the grass fills in.
The Credit One Charleston Open is stepping up environmental efforts on Daniel Island this year — introducing plant-based straws, compostable cups, reusable cup rewards, kegged wine, and food rescue partnerships to cut waste for roughly 90,000 fans attending the tournament.
The Mount Pleasant Town Council is discussing measures to protect local wetlands by considering new zoning permits, development restrictions, and staffing for enforcement as part of its flood resilience plan after nearly 500 acres were lost in Bluffton.
Mayor Will Haynie said residents back the plan because wetlands store water and reduce costs for taxpayers — Charleston Waterkeeper praised this proactive local effort.
On March 31, the Town’s Bids—Purchases Committee approved awarding a $375,069 contract to Truluck Construction LLC for bicycle lane work on Coleman Boulevard to be completed in 90 days at night.
The committee also approved a $598,794 bid for infrastructure improvements at the Rifle Range Road/Hale Road intersection, plans for sidewalk and path upgrades at Patriots Point Road and Mill Street, pending rapid flashing beacon installations near Mamie Whitesides Elementary, and a recommended bid for the Mugsy Kerr Tennis Center expansion.
The Credit One Charleston Open began on March 29 and is set to conclude on April 6 as tournament officials introduce Hologic Electric Line Calling Live that replaces line judges and pairs with a challenge-based video review on two courts—players have shared mixed reactions with Daria Kasatkina supporting the change and Amanda Anisimova expressing caution.
