CRIME NEWS

  • North Charleston police announced on March 27 that the freight truck driver who hit and killed Summerville truck driver William Bennett on March 17 on Don Holt Bridge will not face charges—Bennett fell backward off his truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.  The Post and Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • The International African American Museum hosted Women of the Diaspora on March 27 at 14 Wharfside Street in Charleston to honor African American women's achievements during Women’s History Month— the event featured Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie in a discussion with entrepreneur Kenya Dunn on themes of faith, perseverance, and empowerment. The program highlighted barrier-breaking contributions of figures like Harriet Tubman, Shirley Chisholm, and Ida B. Wells.  WCIV
  • Patriots Point and Maritime Museum will honor Vietnam veterans with a Vietnam Veterans Day exhibit and ceremony on Saturday, showcasing the sacrifices of U.S. combat troops during the Vietnam War. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—with a memorial ceremony at 11 a.m. and a film screening aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown at 1 p.m.—offering free admission for veterans and their immediate families.  WCIV

  • At James Simons Montessori, teacher-librarian Rosie Herold hosted a Stuffy Sleepover on March 27th to spark creativity and literacy; students dropped their favorite stuffed animals in the library, where they were photographed engaging in playful activities—like building LEGO towers and having pretend snowball fights. They returned the next day to see the photos and hear the stories of their toys’ adventures.  Charleston County School District

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Forest Service set new outdoor burning restrictions for the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests on March 26 due to dry conditions and gusty winds that worsened wildfires across South Carolina—banning campfires, charcoal grills, fireworks and similar fire activities until further notice. The state also continues a ban on all outdoor burning that began on March 21 amid ongoing wildfire emergencies.  WCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During Charleston County’s Tuesday council meeting, county leaders deferred a vote on a proposed settlement that would allow developers to build in the historic Ten Mile community—citing a lack of legal details and the need for more community input. The decision will be revisited at the next council meeting on April 8.  WCIV
  • Nonprofit food organizations across the Lowcountry are feeling the strain after the USDA cut nearly $500 million in federal funding, raising fears that food insecurity will worsen. Local groups are evaluating their programs—some planning new fundraising efforts to keep coastal centers serving families.  WCBD
  • Mount Pleasant Town Councilmember Mike Tinkey shared his priorities after winning the March 25 special election—he will listen to residents and partner with HOAs to address local needs.
